Every February 2nd since 1956, the attention of many in Canada turn to Wiarton and a wee groundhog named Willie. On Groundhog Day, Willie pokes up from his hibernation, and with assistance or lack of a shadow, determines whether it will be an early or late spring. The festival begins with activities such as the Wake Up Willie Battle of the Bands several days before the beginning of Februrary, culminating with Willie’s weather prediction at 8:15 a.m. on the 2nd. While in Wiarton, take a picture with ‘Willie Emerging’, the largest groundhog statue in the world.
